The family and I finally watched Elio. It was really good. Keep in mind I haven’t been down on Pixar’s last 5 years of output like many people have been. I’ve enjoyed most of their recent movies. As a lifelong sci-fi fan this film hit a lot of what I look for in those kinds of stories.

Recently picked up a couple of film/TV/comics art books I’ve wanted for a while. The Art of Drew Struzan is a catalog of some of the greatest and most iconic film posters of all time. Each final poster is put alongside early rough concepts drafts.

My way too late ‘seen it before’ Halloween viewing catchup post.
• The Ring- 2002, 4K. I don’t think I’d seen this since the theaters. It’s solid, if somewhat unremarkable. I still think it’s one of the better “pass the curse” horror movies. I showed this one to my kids for the first time.

Last nights spooky viewing. It was pretty good. I liked it slightly more than the filmmakers ‘22 outing, Talk to Me. Both films had similar strengths and weaknesses. Really amazing set up concepts, great atmosphere and vibe, mysterious hook, well made, but then ultimately just ok payoffs at the end.

Just saw PT Anderson’s latest, One Battle After Another. Wow… wow. I figured it would be a well made caper story with some wacky characters. And it was. But what I didn’t count on was how extremely overtly socio-political it would be. And how blunt and harrowing parts of the story got.

2022 Academy Award Nominee. Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a film that’s this bad in such interesting ways. If it had been 2 hours long I would have said I was at least engaged with it. But at 3 hours long I couldn’t wait for it to end. I’d only recommend it for the morbidly curious.

2022 Academy Award Nominee. Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a film that’s this bad in such interesting ways. If it had been 2 hours long I would have said I was at least engaged with it. But at 3 hours long I couldn’t wait for it to end. I’d only recommend it for the morbidly curious.
Been a few years since I dusted off this classic. The kids and I had a good time revisiting it. This needs a really good 4K transfer from the original masters. The 1080p bluray has a weird soft smudgy look to it.

Recently viewed award winner. Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau are really good. And the makeup effects are very good. The rest of the movie was just ok-ish. But it does fall into that category of middling films that some people absolutely love and others totally hate. I can see both sides to that.

2022 Academy Award Nominee. A simple character-driven story about overcoming trauma and finding support where you can. Not much in the way of propulsive plot. But that’s not really what the movie is going for.

Last nights viewing, 2022 Academy Award nominee. A sweet, sentimental story with a wonderful central performance. Interestingly it’s an adaptation of a 1952 Akira Kurosawa film, Ikiru. Which itself is an adaptation of Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Llyich. And it’s VERY British.

Revisited this classic with the kids yesterday. They’ve seen it before but it’s an infinitely rewatchable movie. Honestly it’s probably on my short list of movies I’ve seen the most in my lifetime.

‘22 Academy Award winner. One of the best war movies I’ve ever seen. As far as WW1 films go, I thought this was far more moving than the lauded 1917(2019) film. Note: Netflix defaulted to the English dub 🤮 version. I had to change the settings to the native German language with English subtitles.

First time viewing in probably 20+ years. What a delightful blend of action and comedy. Pacing is a little wonky and it’s probably 10 minutes too long. But overall a fun time!
