The Santa Cruz River, once bone-dry, now flows again through Tucson after treated wastewater was redirected into its channel, reviving wetlands and native life. We can thank reconciliation ecology for this - the practice of environmental restoration in human-dominated landscapes. Endangered Gila […]

I had the most melancholy experience today.

I ordered a thing from Argos. Then I realized I didn't need it. I called them up to cancel it.

The phone menu worked perfectly. Everything was based on key presses, rather than voice commands. The options were exactly aligned to my needs. The whole […]

Argh, tried to cut a 4300 word grant proposal down to 4000, and ended up with 4500 words.

Somehow I'm just reading everything as prompts for romance novels these days.

E.g., in 'Weavers, Scribes, and Kings', by Amanda H Podany, about ancient Mesopotamia, I learn that it was common in the 3rd millennium BCE for emissaries between city-states to travel together.

So the agent of queen […]

In September, The Lancet released a report with one of the most extraordinary statistics I’ve ever seen: since 2010, humanity’s total burden of illness and early death has dropped by 12.6 percent, driven by declining deaths from the world's deadliest infectious diseases: tuberculosis, lower […]

I just want everyone to know that there was a four-month old border terrier named Silas in the park this morning and he was wiggly and cuddly and I love him.

Hey, guyse, The Antidote by Karen Russell is a really, really good book! There's a core supernatural component that will scratch your fantasy itches, but it's incorporated really well into a thematic meditation on the role of memory in culture and individual lives to serve as litfic too.

I perpetually discover anew that there are a myriad small sellers that offer exactly what you want for wayyy less money than the big retailers.

E.g.: I needed a bunch o' spice jars for my new spice drawer. First I looked at Lakeland, Procook, etc., for small jars. But those were £££ for a trio […]

Raaah! Behold me, big strong and handy! I have installed a paper towel holder underneath a cabinet, using sheer muscle power alone! No electric drill for me! Just a screwdriver and my arms! (and shoulders, it seems, ow).

(The screws that came with it were too long to go in all the way easily […]

on a discreet-murder scale from 'choked on a fishbone' to 'stabbed up the nose with a nunchuck', I think being garroted with dental floss definitely leans toward the latter end.
