We're so bad at taking this selection bias into account.
Constantly reminding myself that social media is people bringing me the weirdest, dumbest, most outlandish things from the world to me in their cupped hands and saying, “Can you believe this stupid weird, outlandish thing? Isn’t it depressing?” over and over and over. And I keep saying yes.

Since the dawn of mankind, undergrads have begun their papers this way.
Can someone please explain the undergraduate urge to begin all history papers with some invocation of "throughout history [paper topic] has been essential to humanity"? Or some other appeal to eternal cosmic forces?
