Ok, I guess I'm starting a thread of our resources, so take note also of our images on @umasslibraries.bsky.social's LUNA site: umassamherst.lunaimaging.com/luna/servlet/ Here you can search for Pompeii images by address, collection, keyword, and more. Most images are from Pompeii in Pictures or PPM

I've learned that the UMass link to the Pompeii Bibliography and Mapping Project has been removed. I'm working to get those pages back up, but in the meantime, you can use these direct links to keep working:

MAP: arcg.is/q0Hj0
BIB: www.zotero.org/groups/24991...

Sorry for the hassle

We still have some describing and plenty of QC work still to do, but at this moment you can go to PALP and search for a concept, like "Bucranium" and instantly find the many instances PALP has found located on a map and visualized in image galleries: palp.art/browse/bucra....

An artistic (or visual) concept is an abstract notion of something depicted on a wall, a figure, animal, object, architecture, motif, or element of space. So far, PALP has documented 52,516 instances of concepts, resulting in a total of 2,563,539 triples statements to power the PALP website.

Bringing together all these data, and more, into a custom built Description Workspace wrapping around a novel Description Instrument (structured description space w/ fixed vocabulary), PALP's students (with our review) have described 7,644 walls & identified more than 960 unique "artistic concepts".

These image and spatial data are at the heart of PALP's work to describe all the fresco art on the walls of Pompeii. We could only accomplish this with a cadre of more than 100 undergraduate students and by atomizing the necessary domain knowledge into segments that these clever people could do.

I'm writing up the final report of our (with @sebhth.bsky.social) Pompeii Artistic Landscape Project (PALP) - generously funded by a Getty Foundation's Digital Art History Grant - so I thought maybe I can share some of the results of that work to get started on here.

I’m new here, and so here’s a pic of our excavations from last June in Tharros to get things started.
