Poultry farm density and proximity drive highly pathogenic avian influenza spread - Communications Biology
A study using phylodynamics to investigate highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 spread in southwestern France in 2020 and 2021 demonstrates that a single introduction led to rapid spread, mainly in duck farms, with farm density driving transmission.

📢 New paper out! Since Oct 2023, France has vaccinated ducks against HPAI. Outbreaks dropped sharply. We estimated 314–756 outbreaks were expected, but saw 96–99% fewer. Vaccination likely key, but other factors still to explore. doi.org/10.3201/eid3... @epidesa.bsky.social @inrae-france.bsky.social

🐔🔐 Well done Rebecca, Oksana, and Mattias with excellent presentations at the first conference of the World Animal Biosecurity Association.
From participatory research to practical policy discussion, collective action with farmers policy-makers and researchers is the way forward.

This month, we're hosting Yik Lim Hew, PhD candidate from Hokkaido University 🇯🇵. His research dives into the epidemiology of #HPAI in Japan, and during his stay, he’ll be investigating outbreaks: tracking introductions, regional spread, and species jumps using #phylodynamics.

Thrilled to share our work on the influence of wild boar density on the spread of African swine fever #ASF in northern Italy (Jan 2022 - Sep 2023).
Our model reproduced observed ASF dynamics and showed that wild boar density shaped the second ASF wave only.
