Hi I'm Brent and I'm a PhD student working on viral co-infection dynamics, hoping (🤞) it will help us understand how interactions between #pathogens impact disease #spillover.

Here is an exciting story - understanding how age-based risk factors in the host may contribute to viral evolution of coronaviruses. 🦇🦠🔬

Super important work that takes a One Health approach to building a harmonious future with wildlife and the environment!
Coronaviruses in bats are almost never harmful to humans.

New study led by Dr Alison Peel @alibat.bsky.social looks at co-infections in young bats - and how they might shape how viruses evolve in nature. go.sydney.edu.au/CneWYt

Dutton's happy to welcome Netanyahu, a genocidal war criminal with an outstanding International Criminal Court arrest warrant, to Australia. So guess it's no surprise he says a Coalition govt would reassess the security clearances of Palestinians who have arrived from Gaza #AusVotes25

What a ghoul

I have zero patience for “do climate work but just don’t call it that”.

I am not talking in code about an existential threat bc a handful of Americans like profiting off oil and gas & have managed to brainwashed another handful of Americans.

Don’t capitulate. They’ll take your funding anyway.

Neither Anthony Albanese nor Peter Dutton mentioned the two obvious reforms that would help to solve the housing crisis: scrapping or reducing negative gearing and removing the capital gains tax discount for investors.

Dr Laura Grogan, Senior Lecturer in Wildlife Science at UQ, talks to CBCS about her career journey so far — notably making the switch from veterinary science to ecology and conservation. A talented artist as well as a scientist, you can also see some of her incredible artwork in the article too:

It's DAVID LITTLEPROUD

DAVID LITTLEPROUD is the NATIONALS leader saying children who commit crimes do not deserve civil rights

Guess which communities he's dehumanising & where this disgusting discourse leads

What is Australian bat lyssavirus? Can I catch it from bat poo? What if bats roost near me?
Infection with Australian bat lyssavirus is serious but extraordinarily rare, and there are effective treatments. So there’s no need to panic.

Rabies appears to be endemic now in this seal population. Lots of unanswered questions but may have spread from local jackals or other wildlife 😥
I’d never really contemplated the face-ripping-off horrors of rabid seals. Worst new disease phenotype ever.

Thanks @janeqiu.bsky.social & @sciam.bsky.social for highlighting our work, and the imperative for ecological solutions to bat viral spillover.

Progressing vaccines and health care is important for pandemic preparedness, but so are interventions to prevent spillovers happening in the first place.
Bat-derived viruses have been afflicting humanity with disturbing frequency in recent decades.

Why bats? Why now? And how can we stop it?
