In Burma, one may lose rights they had at one point... and then never get them back. Rights aren't inalienable. I suggest this has something to do with conceptions of (political) personhood and intersubjective / collective understandings of the affordances of the Burmese social milieu [3/3]

whereas Americans describe "our" rights as ours even when they're not delivered (you have to "fight for *your* right to party," as the Beastie Boys are fond of reminding us), this same grammar of possession tends not to attend Burmese descriptions of rights. [2/3]

watch Dunn's genius here. He digs to help so must recover - which means Murray's about to dust him. But watch what he does next: He’s about to do a spin move to recover as JM drives, but then JM anticipates and steps back + so Dunn never flips his hips! He's playing d with his back to the player!

“When you get interviewed about the massacres, make sure you look trustworthy.”

“No problem, I’ll just wear these not at all sketchy or warlordy looking sunglasses and everything will be a ok👌”

"Thais — ... as marginalized migrant laborers — are a *constitutive* exception, one that has enabled, both ideologically and materially, Israel’s project of settler colonialism."
Pleased to be the first (of many, i'm sure!) to review Matan Kaminer's essential new book: rdcu.be/d5ZPI

given today's terrible news about Katherine Franke's shameful treatment by Columbia (academeblog.org/2025/01/10/s...), it seems like a good time to re-encourage academics to stop engaging with that university.

Recently Ghassan Hage @anthroprofhage.bsky.social encouraged us to retain our ability to be shocked at the obscenity of the world (rather than to retreat to the relative safety of cynicism). I feel that kind of shock regarding this essay's publication (1/)

I eschew LinkedIn style faux humility, and so when I say I'm humbled to be a part of
@GCcunyAnthro's colloq, it's truth. I started out in the anthro game, a refugee from dev econ (!), attending 2011 Friday sessions - saw Asad, Balibar, Mbembe, met Coronil before he passed.🥹 So excited to be on it.

Your kids’ apparent categorical inability to fold the tape down each time they use it is actually their way of keeping you in the game, letting you feel useful, allowing you to still matter, as they say, bless them, “erm, sorry. Can you help again?”

haha, the supervisor's choice. Alt text: "i hope you feel better" or "I don't care if you die, here are my comments"
