This is essentially State Farm’s model. Private company owned by the policyholders, not shareholders on the stock market. Still needs to cover costs and plan for potential losses/payouts which have become far more common with climate change

Eventually insurers pulled out of CA and many people ended up on the state insurer of last resort plan (FAIR) which, if there were to be something really widespread, is somewhat of a financial fiction since taxpayers (including homeowners on the plan) reinsure it

Here’s an example from California: the state insurance commissioner keeps requiring companies to write policies in high fire risk zones but for years did not allow that risk to affect the price on that parcel alone. Effectively subsidizes living in a riskier area.

NextGen flopped because of a failure of management and compressed timelines that were still multiple years. I can’t wait to see how they somehow roll this out in 2 weeks.
