Our findings support the existence of a me-search stigma but shows that both me-searchers and allied researchers face stereotypes when studying prejudice and discrimination.

When we examined public perceptions of queer me-searchers studying anti-queer bias, we found a double bind: queer researchers were seen as more biased, while straight researchers were seen as less informed—compared to identical researchers (queer or straight) studying unrelated topics.

In anecdotal accounts, me-searchers often acknowledge that their personal connection to the subject might introduce bias—a concern frequently raised by critics. But that same first-hand experience can also mean they’re uniquely informed and well-positioned to conduct this kind of research.
