I'm a poet, translator, teacher, Indigenous scholar and writer, passionate about endangered languages and the sea.
I asked a US friend how much my surgery and follow-up treatment would have cost in LA, as I was supposed to spend time in California shortly after my accident, and found out that it would have set me back more than $275,000, and this was nine years ago, so I'm assuming it'd be more today.

My friend later said that he thought I had a crush on him and had asked him on a very expensive date - sorry, no, I was just over Kafka and needed a change of scenery.

Couch surfing was still a thing and we found a professor who was going away for thanksgiving and she let us stay in her apartment on Upper Manhattan as long as we promised to feed her cute cat.

Two days later we set off for a week in NYC which cost us more or less nothing.

For those unaware, in 1933, the first major Nazi book burning was of the first 30 years of research into trans and queer people, far before the concentration camps.

Now, Trump has digitally burned the government's research on the same.

If we, as adults, can't call out racism and challenge it publicly when we see it, how could we possibly expect our students to conclude that racism is unacceptable?
