Getting into space and mining asteroids for minerals is going to be better than our current destructive mining methods.
Using fossil fuels for scientific advancement is way better than, for example, using them to fly the rich, celebrities, etc around in private jets.

Why wouldn't we want to meet with Putin? Russia as a unified state is crumbling(check out news on Siberia defecting), there is no reason for either side to continue for much longer.
