There are many issues with Roddenberry - and his writing was super womanizing and limited - but I actually argue that his infamous footnote being purposely ambiguous about K/S might be one of the most brilliant things he did and showed how much he did understand Star Treks power from time to time.

Like DC Fontana and David Gerrold argued that Kirk/Spock was bad because it would make Star Trek look bad to studios and they didn’t want it to be trainted as “the gay show” but Roddenberry actually explicitly made sure to leave it nebulous in his TMP novel because he understood the importance.
