Time to check in on KPop...with some comps.

Here's my favorite chart:

The data for the first half of 2025 is in and the result is clear:

The TV bubble popped.

Not "streaming", since it happened across US, global, scripted, unscripted, broadcast, you name it.

Actually, film decreased more than anything!

I read a lot that some smaller studios can save Hollywood. But the arguments for them are often built around "ROI", but when you look at total revenue, it's a different picture:

Well, this might be my favorite chart of the year:

Share of Nielsen Top Ten Originals since 2021!

Notice anything?

I think @jank0.bsky.social is inadvertantly making a key argument for antitrust enforcers here:

YouTube MUST by divested from Google.

Fairly clear they have market power in digital video, likely facilitated by other Google monopolies (search, ad tech).

I coined the term "The Argylle Treatment" that at least one other film writer regularly uses. Here's Google AI's horrifically bad summary of it:

These are not great ratings for one of the premiere F1 races.

And now Trump is taking aim at foreign film tax credits. Which is exactly what I predicted could happen.

What I got wrong: Turns out, that person who would tell Trump about the tax credits wasn’t a GA senator but Jon Voight.

Here’s the updated chart on Formula 1’s ratings and what caused the viewership rise.

We’ve hit the point where we have enough Disney+’s PR datecdotes to make a chart! Here’s the film look:

Gotta say, this take from me aged pretty well!!!

It is kinda crazy how much more an NBA game costs than a #WNBA game, given that on cable the viewership isn't as far apart (700K to 1.5M average viewers) as you'd guess!
April 22, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Crazy stat of the day:

Caitlin Clark is bigger than F1 by herself. Actually, twice as big!

And yet...

F1 wants a media rights deal nearly equal to the WNBA's latest deal.

Are the streaming wars getting more competitive? My graphs are getting more colorful, but I’m skeptical.

And here's how House of David very quietly did.

It missed Nielsen and Samba TV, has under 10K IMDb reviews and made Luminate for only two weeks.

Safe to say it's not sweeping Hollywood.

I look forward to all the updates on Christian films after a deluge of articles on the subject last year. Here's the WSJ:

Time to debunk some bad media narratives. In one article I…

- Explain why this wasn’t the podcast election, at all
- Judge that Rogan’s Trump interview was equivalent to the 30th best streaming show of the year.
- And show why Trump did more for Rogan than Rogan did for Trump.

Here’s the top five shows by season (according to Nielsen’s weekly charts). Not a lot of shows make it to a fourth season or more on streaming!

Here’s the top 25 streaming films (according to Nielsen’s weekly charts) in 2023 color-coded by theatrical release or not. Theatrical releases dominated the top 15, but streaming did better in the top 25.

Looking at the top genres for new shows on streaming, action/thrillers and sci-fi and fantasy, did really well, making up 14 of the top 25 new shows.

It’s kind of unarguable that the streaming-only playoff game on Peacock worked. It was actually the 11th highest show on streaming all time in my dataset.

This NFL regular season, for streaming only games, the NFL’s ratings were up 31% over last year.

On average, Prime Video’s NFL games were up 19%, accounting for the extra games.
