Marking my calendar for @marthawells.com , @scalzi.com , @nghivo.bsky.social in particular, and I've got a few books to read between now and then ( @sarahgailey.bsky.social, @tochitruestory.bsky.social )

I reread most books I like, but there are books (and Rakesfall was absolutely one) that I know I'll reread as I'm still reading, and there's nothing better than that anticipation.

I finish books I hate if someone I know (and find reliable) recommends them, but it's only ever paid off once and that dubiously (I hated the whole first Thomas Covenant trilogy until the very end of the whole thing, and even now I'm not sure about it - I was young, haven't reread it as an adult)

This was so, so good, but a strong second on "if she's ready." It's HEAVY. Like, I'll recommend it to anyone I know, but I may never reread it, heavy.

Jemisin's Great Cities duology is a little less of a gut punch. I might recommend starting there for a teen reader.

The Parable of the Sower is excellent, but it's VERY grim. Appropriate for an older teen, probably not good for a tween or younger kid.

I read through the thread and didn't see MurderbotThe main protagonist is a genderless construct, but there are several badass female secondary characters. And they're hilarious and sneakily heartrending.

(not sci fi but so good: The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes, and Asunder by Kerstin Hall)

This is the series I came here to recommend. "Space opera" is accurate, more or less, but also a little bit beside the point, but damn, these were fun! If you haven't/if she hasn't read anything about them, I can't recommend enough approaching them without reading anything about them.

Yes, yes, yes! The Imperial Radch books are so good.

Authorities *should* be afraid to escalate.

Authorities *should* hesitate in crucial moments.

Authorities *should* be in more danger than civilians.

If they don't want to be in more danger than civilians, they need to see if the Post Office is hiring.

Or a lot harder, once you've eaten a packing case of cheese powder. One of the two.

Lockwood & Co is my favorite of the book series I've picked up from my kid. And it's one of the best-done (for my own personal flavor of "best-done") book adaptations I've seen. I was sorely disappointed that Netflix canceled it.
