Great review of Murch’s book, who’s consistently interesting.
The neurological key, Murch suggests, is the saccade – ‘the jump of the eyeball from one focal point to another’. In each of these instances (three a second, 172,800 on an average day), you are temporarily blind. ‘The moment our eyes start to move in a saccade, the degraded signals coming from the retina are blocked until our eyes come to rest again ... consequently, we do not see these blurred images, nor do we see any evidence of their removal.’ Our experience of reality, according to Murch, is of something happening ‘approximately 120 milliseconds (three film frames) after it has happened’.

It isn’t the pain that I need to describe for you; there was little pain. It is how I suddenly became aware of a space—the pleural space—inside my body that I did not previously know existed, that hadn’t existed until they pulled something out of it. It’s how I could feel the tube moving along the tissue, a shifting deep in my thorax where I previously had no sensory awareness at all, where I was never meant to have sensation, my interior becoming wrongly tangible. And it was as if only now, when the tube was being extracted, I experienced the violation of its insertion, and so these events transpired in the wrong order, or in no order, happening simultaneously; the extraction made present what I could not remember. One moment you’re in the OR, the next moment you’re in recovery, but the tubes and wires run between those experiences, and when they pull them, they tug some of the controlled trauma into consciousness.

I wondered whether, when they were growing up wanting to be train drivers, this was quite what they had in mind. “Well, the thing is,” said one of them, “I never really wanted to be a train driver in the first place.” I couldn’t think of anything to say to that.

In a way, then, America has become one big bet on AI. Outside of the AI plays, even European stock markets have been outperforming the US this decade, and now that gap is starting to spread. So far in 2025, every major sector from utilities and industrials to healthcare and banks has fared better in the rest of the world than in the US. What that suggests is that AI better deliver for the US, or its economy and markets will lose the one leg they are now standing on.

Multiple sources have told the Guardian that the unthinkable has happened: that the Saudi boxing program seems to have a cash flow problem and that some of the high-level players who came to Las Vegas during Canelo-Crawford fight week were there, not for the fight but to get paid for services rendered in the past. And they left still being owed money.
