Together we are brainstorming how to respond when a caller discloses rape or violence. “I believe you" is written in black marker on flip chart paper. “I believe you" has likely been written on flip charts by anti-violence feminists for decades. “I believe you" is the first step in countervailing victim- blaming and social scrutiny of survivors' stories. It is a non-judgmental precursor to active listening, offering resources and supporting the survivor's choices for healing. I am grateful to the feminists who taught me to believe. My gratitude is tainted, however, by the number of times I've been forced to defend my commitment to anti-violence work to abolitionist feminists— who intentionally confuse sex work with trafficking and violence against women. Abolitionists who aim to keep (or make) sex work illegal, and further still who propose to see sex work no longer exist in any form. This is both ludicrous— as sex work will always exist— and glaringly paternalistic and condescending towards sex workers' individual and community autonomy. The abolitionist argument alone is exhausting enough, but the real damage occurs when abolitionist feminists staff support services that sex workers may need. For example, I have witnessed a white feminist front-line worker tell an Asian sex worker that she could stay at the emergency women's shelter as long as she recognized that sex work isn't work, it should never be called work, only abuse. Would you want to access a support service where a fundamental part of your lived experience was discredited at the front door? “I believe you" has a beginning and an end. Too often sex workers are not believed— and we are not believed by the very services and organizations that claim to uphold the phrase “I believe you.”

There's a common myth that in Soviet Russia, to create full employment, the government would pay people to dig holes.

The myth originates from a passage written by Keynes. It's an extreme example meant to illustrate how government stimulus packages can have a positive impact on the economy.
If the Treasury were to fill old bottles with banknotes, bury them at suitable depths in disused coalmines which are then filled up to the surface with town rubbish, and leave it to private enterprise on well-tried principles of laissez-faire to dig the notes up again (the right to do so being obtained, of course, by tendering for leases of the note-bearing territory), there need be no more unemployment and, with the help of the repercussions, the real income of the community, and its capital wealth also, would probably become a good deal greater than it actually is. It would, indeed, be more sensible to build houses and the like; but if there are political and practical difficulties in the way of this, the above would be better than nothing.

And that’s assuming an incredibly generous 25 percent gross margin — not to mention the fact that the industry’s actual AI revenue is closer to $20 billion annually, as the investment manager noted in his previous blog. “In reality, the industry probably needs a revenue range that is closer to the $320 billion to $480 billion range, just to break even on the capex to be spent this year,” Kupperman posited in his updated essay. “No wonder my new contacts in the industry shoulder a heavy burden — heavier than I could ever imagine. The group had been day-nesting and sunbathing when I contacted them, but upon my approach they nervously retreated to obscure themselves behind thick foliage. Frustrated but determined to see them better, I decided to climb a tree, not one of my better talents. The tree was particularly slithery and, try as I might, no amount of puffing, pulling, gripping, or clawing succeeded in getting me more than a few feet aboveground. Disgustedly, I was about to give up when Sanwekwe came to my aid by giving one mighty boost to my protruding rump; tears were running from his eyes as he was convulsed in silent laughter. I felt as inept as a baby taking its first step. Finally able to grab on to a conveniently placed branch, I hauled myself up into a respectful semislouch position in the tree about twenty feet from the ground. By this time I naturally assumed that the combined noises of panting, cursing, and branch-breaking made during the initial climbing attempts must have frightened the group on to the next mountain. I was amazed to look around and find that the entire group had returned and were sitting like front-row spectators at a sideshow. All that was needed to make the image complete were a few gorilla-sized bags of popcorn and some cotton candy! This was the first live audience I had ever had in my life and certainly the least expected. That day's observation was a perfect example of how the gorillas' sense of curiosity could be utilized toward their habituation. Nearly all members of the group had totally exposed themselves, forgetting about hiding coyly behind foliage screens because it was obvious to them that the observer had been distracted by tree-climbing problems, an activity they could understand.
