Definitely too obsessed with stationery at the moment. I saw this ad and thought "ooh that's a fancy pen"

Fellow Brits, I need you to work on your spice tolerance because the only enchilada kids I could find were this (mild) and EXTRA MILD. Nevermind a spicy option there wasn't even a normal one 😭

Book 9 of 2024 The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence
*2.5 Sadly my biggest disappointment of the year. This had so many elements that should have worked for me but the execution just wasn't that interesting. I really wanted more atmosphere from the library setting.

Book 8 of 2024 Eve by Cat Bohannon
4* Really interesting but hard to recommend to everyone as it gets stuck in to some proper textbook science stuff. If that isn't a turn off then you'll get to learn more about our evolution through a new lens.

Book 7 of 2024 Butter by Asako Yuzuki
4* I'm really surprised that this book has been given book of the year by Waterstones just because I don't see many people jiving with it, but maybe I'm wrong?
I really enjoyed it. Loved the time taken over food. Loved the feminism. Didn't mind the slow pace.

Book 6 of 2024 She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai and Naruki Nagakawa
3.5* a cute set of connecting stories involving cats in Japan and their owners. A perfect palette cleanser book. I think there was some drama with the human characters but I don't actually remember too much.

Book 5 of 2024 (last post had a typo) Menace of the Machine: The Rise of AI in Classic Science Fiction
3* It's classic sci-fi and a short story collection so it's bound to be a mixed bag. I'm glad I got to read more classic stuff but next time I'll probably go for one of the major novels.

Book 3 of 2024 - The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Naylor
4.5* Thought provoking scifi about intelligence (both natural and artificial) and animal conservation.
One of my top books of the year.

Book 3 of 2024 - Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
4* This was a reread. I have a lot of love for the series and I'm a bit behind so thought a reread was due.
Also my first time listening to the audio book. The narrator was great!

Book 2 of 2024 - Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Another 3.5*
I liked a lot of the ideas here and it has LGBTQ+ rep but for whatever reason the characters didn't do it for me and the story never quite pulled me in.

Book 1 of 2024 - Ghost Music by An Yu.
3.5* not sure if this classes as magical realism or just something that features dream sequences. It has a sense of gentle melancholy and strangeness that puts it at home with a lot of Japanese and Korean fiction.
