Tommy James' "Draggin' the Line" was written about the everyday routine of working. The title line of the song was born out of the melody of the song, he said the bass "spoke" the words to him. Written on his farm in upstate New York, James said he likely couldn't have written the song in the city.

Did you know that "SWLABR" by Cream was meant to stand for "She Was Like a Bearded Rainbow"? Pete Brown said it was written about a man defacing pictures of his girlfriend after she "has given him the elbow". It's meant to be nonsensical and psychedelic. What's your favorite Cream song?

Steely Dan's "Chained Lightning" was written to be a character singing the song, like other Steely Dan music. This one is about a nazi sympathizer (Donald Fagen was of Jewish descent, not meant at all to be a reflection of reality). The lyric "the little man" refers to Hitler.

While writing "Friday I'm in Love" for the Cure, Robert Smith was convinced he stole the chord progression and eventually was assured it was original after no one could tell him what it was from. Released May 15, 1992, it reached 6th on UK charts and 18th on US charts.

"Take Me to the River", originally an Al Green song, was popularized by Talking Heads. Appearing on their second album "More Songs About Buildings and Food", it was their biggest hit at that point. This was the only cover Talking Heads ever did.

"1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" is one of Jimi Hendrix's longest songs at 13:39. This song describes an escape from all the problems of the world, like the Vietnam War. The transformation is likely meant to be drug induced.

"Sunday Girl" was written by Blondie guitarist Chris Stein after Debbie Harry's cat named Sunday Man ran away while they were on tour. The song was never released as a single in the US but reached #1 on UK and Irish charts.

"Symptom of the Universe" by Black Sabbath was allegedly written about a dream lyricist and bassist Geezer Butler had. The song was released July 28, 1975, nearly 50 years ago. It's considered to have influence from trash metal while not necessarily being thrash.

"Possum Kingdom" by Toadies was inspired by folklore with Possum Kingdom Lake near the bands native Fort Worth, Texas. The song became their biggest hit and the band had trouble producing something that could live up to Rubberneck (1994).

Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" was written by John Fogerty, who reportedly took inspiration from watching 1941 black and white film "The Devil and Daniel Webster". The song is meant to have apocolyptic meaning yet has an upbeat sound to contrast its lyricism.

"Spill the Wine", War and Eric Burdon's hit collaboration, came from a bottle of wine being spilled during a jam session with the band. That occurence combined with a song Burdon had already been working on to make "Spill The Wine" the biggest hit off "Eric Burdon Declares War" (1970).

"Brothers in Arms" from Dire Straits' fifth album by the same name, which turns 40 this year, was written during the Falklands War. The song was featured in "The West Wing" episode "Two Cathedrals" with President Jed Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen).

"Layla" was written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, released with their band Derek and the Dominos. the inspiration for the 1970 song came in part from a love story in Persian literature and in part from Clapton's secret love for Patty Boyd, who was at the time married to George Harrison.

Fleetwood Mac's Silver Springs is best known for the 1997 performance of the song with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham staring a hole through one another. Written by Nicks following the breakup of the two, it was meant to be on Rumours (1977) but released as a B-side to Go Your Own Way.
