I'm still new to Bluesky, so here's a bit of info for those who don't know me. I'm a beer writer & audio maker & have my fingers in a number of pies (which, as everyone knows, go perfectly with beer). I post mainly about beer, pubs, books, mental health & equality. More at fermentationonline.com
Fashionably late as usual, here’s my regular round up of the best books I’ve read this month - October 2025

Only three this month, but each one represents a very different way of telling a true story.

For the first - and possibly only - time this year, here’s my regular round up of the best books I’ve read this month - September 2025

On some days it was warm enough to read outside, on others I had my central heating on high, but these books have seen me through the change in seasons.

With a Trump flag hanging just a few hundred yards from where I live, and now the shelves of my local Tesco Express completely devoid of houmous, it’s hard not to feel personally targeted as a lesbian at the moment…

Thank you to @willhawkes.bsky.social & his @londonbeercity.bsky.social newsletter for drawing this wonderful film to my attention. It’s a fantastic snapshot - featuring some very familiar faces - of the excitement of the London brewing scene back in 2010.

I am a trans woman in the UK. My most influential enemies are the guy who co-created a sitcom about Catholic priests back in the 90s, a woman who wrote some children’s books about wizards, and the prime minister.

Sometimes I feel a little crazy about this.

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

Many days late, here’s my regular round-up of the best books I’ve read in the past month (or 2!) - June / July 2025

I’ve read hundreds of thousands of words this summer but most were for a big project I’m working on. This has left little time for reading for pleasure but here are the best!

Happy Beer Day Britain everyone!
In the absence of a breakfast beer (an oversight on my part, obvs), I’m heading out to the pub in a bit to meet Beer Day Britain founder, @schoolofbooze.bsky.social herself, for a Sunday roast…& perhaps the odd beer or two.

Very shocked to hear this news earlier today. Martyn was a founder member of @britbeerwriters.bsky.social & his death will be a huge loss to beer writing.
Very sad and shocked to hear of the passing of Martyn Cornell today - only saw him last week, especially poignant with his Porter book due to be published

Just ten years ago the UK was top of the list - the best place in Europe for LGBT rights. We are now 22nd

The only country to drop faster in one year than us is Hungary

The government needs to act in a major way before this becomes their entire legacy

Percival Everett - James (2024)
Two novels in one month? Unheard of for me! But this re-imagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from the perspective of Huckleberry's friend, Jim, the escaped slave, is a masterpiece.
If you read one book this year…

"When I go to a pub it's not about the beer. Of course I like the beer but I go to be with the people, to feel that I'm doing something to make them happy, to make them proud. Work, home, then we go to a pub just for a beer or two beers and finish. This is our life."
