I prefer to leave them as long as possible but it depends on the weather - they can sometimes rot if the weather turns cold/wet, especially if you get frosts. It's a balancing act between letting them mature long enough but not leaving them out and losing them to rot (or in my case, hungry parrots)

Yes, slugs love them 😞 My strategy is to thickly plant mustard/radish seeds where I intend to plant seedlings/tubers, a week or two ahead, creating a ring or a patch of sprouts. I find slugs usually prefer the mustard. I think marigolds work too.

Not a guarantee, but I tend not to lose as many now.

I plant basil everywhere, partly to eat, and for the insects of course, but it's also great in bunches of flowers. One of my favourite plants.
