Seed planting day, starting with the most important ones to get started: tomatoes

Some staples and some newcomers this year.

Had a little scare when I heard a rustle and saw a striped tail slither under a bush. I haven't seen a tiger snake here but I know they are around. I was very glad to see a chonky head and blue tongue emerge a few moments later 😅

To do: Clean up rockery!

Happy first day of spring!

How is it September? Every year I think "plenty of time in winter to do the pre-spring jobs, easy" and every year I fail 😩😆 I'm moving the goalposts to the equinox to buy a bit more time.

The ranunculus are ready to pop (the ones not vandalised by parrots, that is)

Picked some celery, obviously didn't check it thoroughly enough when I rinsed it. Felt something tickle my hand as I was chopping, assumed it was a hair. Flicked my hand without looking, still tickling. Actually looked at my hand... Ah, yes, that explains it...

A huntsman spider, not a hair. 😆

First decent frost of the year ❄️

Gutted that it wasn't two days ago because our first good frost in both 2023 and 2024 was on June 20, and I really wanted that to happen a third time in a row 😆

Happy solstice for yesterday!

Pretty little skink friend, moved out of the way while I was digging dahlia beds over.

Knows it's onto a good thing - the beds are full of baby worms, isopods, slugs, and ants. A lizard buffet!

Slowly working my way though my dahlias, digging and dividing some, leaving others in their pots.

It's interesting to see the difference in the tubers across different plants. Over time I will probably cull any that are finicky and just stick with the easy to store cultivars.

Tidying up in the garden. This fama plant was getting a little big for its neighbours, so I gave it a prune and found some pieces had roots - free plants from pre-made cuttings!

Popped them around the place and admired how great the soil is looking - it has come so far 🤎🌱

This teeny tiny lavender is too short for cut flowers, but perfect for little scented bundles or adding to gift ties. I adore the compact flowers. 💜

First harvest from the lilly pilly hedge. When the hedges are bigger and the fruit is plentiful, I'll share with the birds. For now though, mine!

They are really delicious dried - quite tart but also kind of floral. They make delicious jam, too.

Volunteer kabocha squash from the dahlia patch 😆

I welcome volunteer pumpkins as groundcover - any fruit is a bonus.

Roasted with onions and garlic (still working through last year's garlic harvest), then blended with stock. One had a drier texture, but hey, you get what you pay for.

My favourite autumn breakfast - greens from the garden (rocket "pronto"), cherry tomatoes from the freezer, cooked in a pan with homemade chilli oil, and a fried egg (from next door) on top. I could eat this every day (until zucchini season!)

Chop and drop season!

The choughs have returned, and while I love that my garden attracts wildlife, they can be extremely destructive to young plants.

Laying branches down impedes them a bit, giving plants a chance to get established. Luckily I don't want formal beds 😆

Sitting in my car, unboxing seeds because I couldn't wait to get home and do it 😄

Ranunculus and zinnia seeds from Southern Highlands Flower Farm. How lovely are the reusable tins? 💚

First batch of pre-sprouted ranunculus going in the ground today. Some are a little slower to wake up, so they can go in next week.

If only I had picked these yesterday 😅 Net bags aren't adequate against parrots but I was hoping they wouldn't spot them. Washed them off and cut off the nibbles.

I keep my trees small so that they are easy to maintain. This tree is only chest high, but grew huge 250gram apples 💚

Last year I made "garden beds" (😅) using a piece of cardboard and a bag of compost spread on top. I planted ranunculus into the compost and added sugar cane mulch on top. They flowered profusely.

This year, the soil has been improved a lot more, so I'm hoping they'll be even better.
