The legal definition of a woman in the UK now excludes trans people: This is what it means for Trans+ rights in the country

It's notable that these topics always become shocking for academia when it's white academics from the Global North who are impacted. But if you work in the UK, there are people at your university who cannot travel to archives or conferences because of their immigration status! For sure!

spent the last two days at the 'Global Southing Internet, Data, and AI Studies Workshop', organised by @jonasvalente.bsky.social at the Oxford Internet Institute - so many brilliant papers and generative conversations - and enjoyed presenting my own research on Nigeria

AI chatbots are still anti-thinking plagiarism machines that are wrong most of the time. I don’t care who uses them or says they’re great or thinks they’re our collective future. My future involves a lot of thinking, original work, and getting things right, so I have no use for them

Does anyone have access to Samaila Suleiman’s article ‘Archives as spaces of power: The social life of National Archives of Nigeria’? Published in Ibadan Journal of Humanistic Studies, vol. 31, no. 1 (2021). Thanks in advance! #historiansky #nigeria

This from @christophersmith.bsky.social will (like the blog-post immediately before it) be of interest for @kawulf.bsky.social , @alanlester.bsky.social , @sathnam.bsky.social , @nevillemorley.bsky.social and others. Good to see the inherently collaborative nature of historical research recognised.
Future proofing the present through the past
Historical research has always been political and indeed the very act of memorialization is necessarily partial, selective and therefore exclusionary.  No-one can write a comprehensive history…

@eryk.bsky.social's ‘The Hypothetical Image’ essay is a great read. I am currently writing a thesis chapter that uses similar frameworks of generative AI, nostalgia, imagination, and history, to analyse historical meaning-making through photography and generative AI in Nigeria.

There's also a great article by Tayo Agunbiade (who sadly died recently) about the feminist anti-colonial politician Margaret Ekpo and her role in the dispute:

Remembering Margaret Ekpo and the Enugu strike massacre
After the killing of 20 protesters during a mining strike in Nigeria, Ekpo made her name as a feminist and activist.

This is happening now in Beirut.

X, as horrific as it got, is a loudspeaker for the silenced. I am still there because of it. We must get intentional about circulating the horrors in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan if we intend to make this the just alternative.
#Israel’i air strikes just flattened these residential apartment blocks in #Beirut. You can hear shocked screams of people in the street below as the missiles hit & the buildings collapse in just seconds. This is the daily reality of life in #Lebanon’s capital now.
