Favorite NF picture book (currently!) is probably the lovely Hey, Water! by Antoinette Portis. And it goes well with the #SunWriteFun #kidlit contest theme of "steam" this year!

A belated thank you to @authorjamilah.bsky.social for her role in the @pbrisingstars.bsky.social seminar, I learned a lot and also was excited this weekend to see her charming book "Sister Friend" in my local library! PB writers/enjoyers are advised to check out her website: jamilahthewriter.com

Last one on my list, ONE MORE JAR OF JAM, by Michelle Sumovich and Gracey Zhang, 2023. A girl with a mulberry tree in her yard and the aftermath of its falling. Included because I can't resist a ripe mulberry off the tree, even though this is not a foraging book!

WILD BERRIES from 2013 by Julie Flett, a boy and his grandmother pick wild blueberries in the forest. There are a lot of Cree vocabulary words and an edition in Cree as well. I love Julie Flett's art and the story is sweet.

A new favorite, BERRY SONG by Michaela Goade, from 2022. A Tlingit girl and her grandmother in the Alaskan islands gather berries throughout summer and reflect on their connection to the earth.

this one is REALLY touching. And a Caldecott Honor Book!

Another classic is Bruce Degen's JAMBERRY, from 1999. A little boy and bear rhyme their way through picking blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries.

I loved blackberry picking as a kid... and still do as an adult.

The most famous example has to be Robert McCloskey's BLUEBERRIES FOR SAL, from 1948.

Sal and her mother, and Little Bear and his mother, get mixed up while picking blueberries.

This one is precious to me because my mom spend a lot of her childhood summers blueberrying in Maine, where this is set

I'm going to do a little thread on examples of my favorite hyper specific genre of picture book, and hopefully spark a little discussion and people sharing other examples too! my first attempt to start a #kidlit convo on here.

What is it? #BerryPickingBooks
