The white officers would disembark at the harbor and go ashore. They weren’t supposed to but custom.

When Smalls took over that night, he was wearing the captain’s hat and he knew all the signals as they passed forts and checkpoints. Once they cleared, they put up a white flag for the Union.

On the night of, he discussed with the other crew and they agreed. When their families were told, they all agreed. (Families of enslaved crew members were allowed to visit when the ship was at the harbor but they picked some up as well.) All decided if they did this, it was freedom or death
