The United States is experiencing a measles outbreak, with 277 cases reported in 32 jurisdictions as of November 7, 2024. This is more than triple the number of cases reported in 2023, and there have been 16 outbreaks so far in 2024.

I tried these tactics on TikTok in 2020 and the anti-covid any-vax MAGA folk weren’t having it… even respectfully provided information will fall on deaf ears

That kind of happened, kind of didn’t as the app grew quickly. Now if you look at videos with the hashtag it’s a lot of wacky celebrity videos and even people sharing “DIYs” which is terrifying (and I just presented an abstract on at PSTM)

At the time, there actually wasn’t a lot of misinformation and most of the videos were by actual plastic surgeons, I presented at our national meeting and advocated for more of us to get on the app and make content to combat misinformation early on!

It was a fun cool story haha, I was one of the first on TikTok back in the day, and did an analysis of every video with the #plasticsurgery at the time, looking at who posted it, what it was about, etc. My program director kindly let me do this study as an intern back in 2020 😅

I recently authored a new chapter on Patient Safety for our major plastic surgery textbook, Grabb and Smith. For the first time, DEI and psychological safety are discussed as vital aspects of patient safety in plastic and reconstructive surgery 📚
