Every time an American mentions that Canadians aren't traveling to the US, they say it's because of tariffs. It's not tariffs. This recent announcement by the Girl Guides of Canada to suspend all travel to the US is about SAFETY. 😢

Is anyone good at knowing their spiders? I found this really interesting spider while sweeping out some camping chairs that had stayed outside over the winter.

We’re on Saturna Island in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve never seen a spider like this before.

I picked up A Two-Spirit Journey to learn more about what it means to be two-spirit. What I got was an engaging story of resilience, perseverance, strength, and love.

May we all strive to be as strong and kind as Ma-Nee Chacaby.

I picked up this book based on a recommendation from a fellow writer, who suggested it was helpful in accurately describe trauma.

It also demonstrates a clear and urgent need for society to become trauma-informed and recognize trauma as a key underlying factor in many health issues.

The tech oligarchy have a lot of money and power invested in making people think AI is the inevitable future... useful... legitimate.

Reality doesn't matter when you control what people see and hear.

In March 2022, I think everyone knew OpenAI was infringing on copyright laws. But the tech oligarchy have a lot of money invested on selling people their snake oil and exploitation.

Every person who justifies the use of AI has been sold on Tech PR that ignores existing copyright and fair use laws

I'm catching up on older Murakami novels before reading his latest one. 😎

Kafka on the Shore is an exploration of identity, understanding, love, and loss. It is about making choices, being responsible for our actions, and doing what is required even when it's difficult.

I think Apollo's expression sort of expresses my feelings this morning. Interpret as you will or read the alt text which is more descriptive..

The best deal ever!

(I imagine the employee laughing as they posted the sign). 😂

Sometimes I want to live like Apollo... he is literally a walking plush toy and isn't afraid to ask for whatever it is he wants (food, cuddles, the warmest place on the bed).

He is also blissfully unaware of the politics of mealtimes and the hierarchy of the toys.

#fivelittleindians is a very readable book exploring some of the consequences of the Church-run residential schools in British Columbia. It captures difficult subjects and resiliency in a way that is honest and hopeful.

Spending March break in France with my family. Every time we are asked where we are from there is a distinct change in expression when we say that we’re from Canada.

It can be a bright smile or a sudden excitement to talk with us. The feeling is palpable. Everyone supports Canada.

Last week while we were packing for vacation.

Apollo is being well cared for this week as we’re doing a home exchange with a pet loving family.

Another beautifully written #BannedBook.

This copy had a forward charting Sandra Cisneros' journey as a writer that was almost as engaging as the short stories themselves.

Apollo and Minerva are littermates from a feral cat rescue. They are both lap cats and they are probably spend close to half their time sitting on me.

Now, if I can get them to move so I can work this afternoon!

I've been reading up a storm! Mostly #BannedBooks because they tend to be amazing works of literary fiction.

Rereading The Color Purple and I love Alice Walker's acknowledgements:

"I thank everybody in this book for coming."

This is exactly how writing feels to me.

Saw this guy on Saturna Island this morning. I know nothing about frogs. In fact, this may be the first one I’ve ever seen in the wild since moving to the PNW. 😀

I first came to Bluesky because it was where #writers and #authors were hanging out. I'm trying to create a food community, and it is definitely growing!

Question: How do we get our friends and family to move over here? I miss seeing them in my feed but I don't want to spend time on Meta. 🫤

I loved all the books about Ingrid Barrøy, however, Eyes Of The Rigel is my favorite. Ingrid is on a journey with a clear goal. The scenery is beautiful and evocative. And the steep cost of war and supporting the enemy is marked by the peace of 1946.

So here is something I accomplished in the past month...

Finally cleaned out a huge stash of sweaters that were too small to wear but couldn't bare to throw away.

Another book exploring the cost of childhood trauma. Blue Sisters is a fairly quick read, both entertaining and moving. I particularly loved the deep dives into each of the sisters' lives and their differing perspectives.

Birdie is a deeply feeling novel about surviving childhood trauma. I found it a very difficult and emotional read. But also hopeful because of deep importance of kind relationships and indigenous traditions.

My current WIP is focused on how trauma passes down through generations. It is a very emotionally difficult piece, but also so valuable. Once you start recognizing trauma, you start seeing it everywhere. 💛

I've also been reading a lot of books featuring trauma.
