The problem is they effectively would have handed their own child to Trump as a hostage. He would have gladly shut down the federal government and reopened just those parts he deemed essential. Maybe the Democrats should have fought anyway, but Trump would have let the government stay shut down.

"undaunted by Washington resistance" is totally inappropriate language, suggesting very strongly that "analysis" is being sacrificed for propaganda.
