You're "meant" to realize that low rank nobodies are disposable, using them up and then cutting them loose when they're broken and no further use to you. Fill the empty spots in your party and then cut them loose.

Darkest Dungeon does something like this intentionally. Your character is reclaiming their family estate, and hires mercenaries to do the delves into the crypts, the local forest, etc. They come back grievously wounded in body and spirit, and treating them is both slow and costly.
