It’s like that Year 8 teacher who went straight from school to uni to teaching job and got stuck with the part-time ‘careers guidance’ gig. Clueless, inexperienced and faced with a not-average kid, they paste on a cheerful attitude and say hopefully, “You can do anything, if you really want to!”

Wandering through this year’s Archibald exhibition, it was fun to see the variety of charmed smirks, grins and smiles that appeared as people encountered her entry. Equally gratifying: the way people leaned in for a closer look at the layered imagery and details.
