I came here solely to say I got to be a kid again and do Halloween with my eldest last week almost like how it is in Canada and it was amazing & while I ought to be doing something to fix the world or work, I am here to share my joy, & to brag of carving a Kiki pumpkin better than I thought I could.

Every election for the last 15 years I have been able to eliminate 2/3 parties I usually consider simply because THERE IS NO PLATFORM AVAILABLE, before I even ask whether I agree with it. How can this utterly minimum requirement be so hard??

"Coming from industrial chemistry, it occurred to me that linguistics might develop in a more scientific direction by using data on what speakers actually did say. I thought this might be accomplished with the help of a new [1961] but still rarely used device, the tape recorder." – William Labov
Afterword: Where are we now?
Labov recapitulates his view of linguistics when he entered the field in 1961, and what he hoped to achieve. He acknowledges Meyerhoff's stress on the convergence of methods and Coupland's view of th...

Universities all over Europe are cutting language programs and closing the doors to the world. We want to get a more complete picture: where, when, why?
If you know of any such cases, please tell us (and share the link with your language and linguistics contacts)!

Colleague at door I didn't hear: uh Emily, can we borrow you?
This is after I spent the entire morning meeting munching dried mango. I am rapidly turning into Jordan from Studio 60.

Any suggestions on how to respond at work to 'how's the pregnancy going' that are more interesting than 'all good no worries' but are less ridiculous than my automatic reaction to say things like 'well, I have my food shelf back' or 'look I can annoy the baby by bending over'

I have had a 'new significant tasks yes/no committee' for about a year, and they are Not an academic. It is hilarious trying to explain why I keep asking about whether to take on more free labour for academic brownie points.

Remember Thug Notes? (literature explained in thug-meme-style videos) I want Thug Notes for everything legal and academic. I want a youtube channel reproducing the American Chopper Chomsky v. Everett meme for Everything Jargon. I live for footnote drama.
Check out footnote 2, in which Fulton County trial judge Robert C. I. McBurney tells the Georgia Supreme Court that he is not a fan of their faux modesty and dubious constitutional interpretation.

#emca Could you share your process for preparing transcripts for publication? Especially if that is transcripts->images! I'm thinking we should make a tutorial.
Will message for citing you if I can get time together to make something proper. Meanwhile the tread is a start.

Sometimes, connections come in unexpected places.

This is me and Stephan Chambers, Director of the LSE Marshall
Institute. We met because of our roles at LSE, so I didn't expect him to start our meeting by saying, “you’re a conversation analyst!”

And then the story got poignant.
