We picked apples at a local you-pick orchard (just across the KS line) and got some hot cider donuts and a cider slush. It was a beautiful morning, families were out spending time with each other. It was awesome. Rural areas shouldn’t be left behind.

As a hobbyist photographer, I rarely get the “that’s the one” feeling when I’m shooting. Yesterday, I got it twice.

The difference in responses I am getting from my democrat U.S. House rep and my republican senator is disappointing but not surprising.
Email text from Rep Emanuel Cleaver pt 1 Dear [redacted], Thank you for contacting my office with your concerns surrounding Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This issue is very important to me, and I welcome the opportunity to respond. As you know, there have been worrying reports regarding Elon Musk and his allies accessing government agencies and making sweeping - and often illegal - changes. Perhaps the most concerning is his infiltrating secure Treasury Department systems. The payment system that Musk and his allies now have access to holds the sensitive information of most Americans, including Social Security Numbers, Medicare benefits, and tax refunds, among other essential and private data. Elon Musk, a notable contributor to President Trump's campaign, has also been advising the President on policy and taking steps to illegally eliminate crucial federal agencies, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). These agencies, however, are critical for furthering national security and protecting American consumers from predatory and fraudulent business practices. DOGE has also gained access to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Education, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Email text from Rep Emanuel Cleaver pt. 2: The true reason why Musk is interested in accessing these agencies is almost certainly to further his own businesses and personal wealth. Although he is operating as a "special government employee," which requires by law that he recuse himself from any matters that could impact his financial interests, he has not divested from his vast holdings nor has he stepped down from his companies. There are thus many unethical conflicts of interest already. For instance, X's money service (a new feature called "X Money Account") is regulated by the CFPB, which Musk has effectively shut down. This shocking example is just one of many. Through contracts, tax breaks, loans, and other means, the federal government has supported Musk's business empire with billions of dollars, while at least 11 federal agencies have more than 30 investigations into Musk's companies. Many of these pending investigations have been thrown into question by Musk's efforts to shrink or eliminate these agencies. These unlawful actions from an unelected billionaire are dangerous. They threaten to turn our cherished liberal democracy into an authoritarian plutocracy. Elon Musk and his DOGE allies must be stopped. Email text from Rep. Recently, I joined with 154 of these colleagues to send a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressing concern regarding Musk and his allies' illegally accessing the Treasury payment system. On February 4th, I joined my colleagues in protest outside of the Department of Treasury office building. On February 10th, my colleagues and I rallied outside the CFPB. Furthermore, my fellow Democrats and I have been demanding that our Republican colleagues join us in drafting legislation to protect the private information of American taxpayers. I am a proud cosponsor of the Taxpayer Data Protection Act (H.R. 1101), which would ensure U.S. private citizens' data is not subject to reckless and unlawful interference. Thus far, none of my Republican colleagues have chosen to cosponsor this critical bill. Watching the wealthiest man in the world continuously grab for power to further enrich himself at the expense of everyday Americans is deeply disturbing, and I will continue to participate in actions to combat this shocking and illegal overreach.
