Ah! You probably want one of the Webster's New Internationals, which is easier since there were only three editions, and the Third wasn't published until 1961. :)
If it was: big and had a bunch of color plates, I'm betting it was the Second (1934).

Hmm, I don't have a lot of M-W dictionaries from that era, but ... they did a LOT of advertising! So you should be able to see covers by searching Google Books for magazines in that period for the exact phrase "Merriam-Webster Collegiate" (because Collegiate is a trademark)
