As traffic continues to rise and road networks expand, we must find more effective ways to protect our amphibian neighbours.

Ensuring their survival helps preserve the vital biodiversity and ecosystem functions they support.

Despite our best efforts, it was heartbreaking to see that 52 amphibians were still struck by cars.

Road mortality is a leading cause of the decline of Britain’s amphibians, and initiatives like "Toads on Roads," while invaluable, are not yet carried out on the scale we need.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the training, advice, and equipment so generously provided by Perthshire Wildlife, Tay ARG, and Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.

Amphibian ladders like these save lives and should become a statutory part of road maintenance and development in areas with known migration routes.

Last night, as we removed the grate to rescue another pair of toads at the bottom of the gully, we were amazed to find a second pair already ascending the ladder to freedom.

This past Friday, amphibian escape ladders were built and installed in these gully pots thanks to Perthshire Wildlife, Tayside ARG, and a handful of dedicated volunteers with funding from Perth & Kinross Council.
