Atheism is not materialism. Most atheists (me included) reject the concept of anything existing beyond the physical realm but it is not a requirement to be an Atheist.

When living with chronic pain you can understand how many people in hospices and hospitals convert to religion.
Giving a meaning to your pain is such an alluring prospect when you spend all day in bed thinking of nothing else.
