Typing it, it feels selfish. But I'm working in two acute psychiatric settings for the pay of one, and that has to be enough. It has to be. There is no "maybe" it's enough. It has to be. Because I am already panicked pacing around a house of cards. One more awful news story and it falls. /fin

Right now, for a lot of people, there's no amount of exposing ourselves to the ongoing horrors that's going to fix this. There's nothing more we can do when we're already stretched so damn thin. Sometimes the best and only way of fighting we have is surviving. 5/

And I think, especially in mental health fields or even other helping professions, we need to stop demonizing ourselves and our colleagues for prioritizing our own wellbeing. There's no awards for burning out first or hardest. So why do we feel like we have to? 4/

When my spouse deploys, I block all news from that area. When my oldest left for college, I realized pretty quick that keeping up on the news for the city they're in is bad for my anxiety. Is it the best approach to completely ignore? I don't know. I do know it helps me. 3/

We're all MSW students in our field practicum. Which means: we are not paid for our practicum time, we are balancing paid work so we can survive, our lives, pets, families, maybe some self care. And many of us are working with acute patients or in crisis work. 2/
