I plan to incorporate nutrition in my role as a future healthcare professional by keeping in mind that not everyone has access to the same healthy foods, and it is our jobs to find the alternatives for the patients. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This brings up an important point. Nutrition is complicated, and just because something in excess is not healthy, does not mean that it isn’t important for our diet. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
Too much of anything can be bad for you—that’s exactly what too much means...yet we constantly slide from "too much of something is a problem" right into "any of that is toxic!"
Many things that are risky in excess are essential or safe in moderation.
Nutrition isn’t black+white - neither is eating.

Tom’s story shows how taking a small step such as choosing the salad can be the first step to a healthier life. These steps come without the outside pressure, and helps lead to success. I will consider this with my future clients by remembering to set attainable goals. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

A common barrier is the unhealthy diet of friends and family. My friends and I are quick to ask each other if we would want a “sweet treat” instead of picking healthier options. We often chose these unhealthy foods if we don’t have the time to sit down for a full meal. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

The FAD diet that I looked into is the keto diet. Keto is a high fat, low calorie diet that many use for weight loss. People on a keto diet restrict themselves from foods such as bread, pasta, and rice. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Dr. Emma Beckett reminding us that we don’t have to restrict ourselves, but rather understand what we need to eat to fuel our bodies! #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
We often turn to extreme/restrictive diets because we feel like healthy eating isn't working. But why jump right to extreme? You might just need some support. That support might be practical advice, understanding, or other tools.

Great piece -- and a further concern is that those @fda.gov infographics, with fresh salmon, trail mix and olive oil, just play into the healthy=expensive illusion.

Here's a version with cheaper items, also healthy but more affordable and less associated with fancy brands & food culture:

This grabbed my attention, as Dr. Emma Beckett is reminding others that it is important to look into the demographic of studies before assuming it applies to yourself! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353
Don't just read US reporting & assume it applies in Australia. Red #3 isn't in many foods here, ONLY preserved cherries. And the evidence and regulation that led to the FDA ban is very specific. Stay calm, read more than the headlines, don't just parrot.
