This isn’t just about economic growth - it’s about redefining industries, amplifying cultural impact, and securing the UK’s place as a global leader in creative technology
February 10, 2025 at 11:41 AM
But this is just the beginning. To cement the UK’s global leadership, we propose:
✅ A CreaTech skills revolution – integrating creativity & tech into education
✅ More R&D investment to drive innovation
✅ A CreaTech Catapult
✅ Smarter funding to help UK startups scale globally
February 10, 2025 at 11:41 AM
Key findings:
🔹 CreaTech is already thriving - 350,000 professionals & 14,000 businesses driving innovation
🔹 It’s not just gaming and software - for example, 3D printing is revolutionising fashion sustainability, immersive tech is redefining education & more
February 10, 2025 at 11:41 AM
That’s why I’m excited to launch new research today. Commissioned by the Royal Anniversary Trust and DCMS, this report on CreaTech is backed by fresh data and insights from leaders in education (Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education winners), policy & industry.

One of the biggest drivers of long-term productivity is technological innovation. Nowhere is this more evident than in CreaTech, which describes the ways in which emerging technologies like AI, VR, and robotics are transforming all creative industries.

I should add - I personally grateful to John, Amy and Jordan from Intelligence Agency who worked with me and the NT on the paper. A powerhouse team!

The UK boasts one of the world's most successful performing arts sectors. It generates £4.38bn in turnover, contributes £2.26bn in GVA annually and enriches communities, drives tourism, & fosters well-being. An ecosystem of freelancers to multinationals powers this success.

Observing the UK Soft Power Council’s first meeting gave me hope. It offers a chance to unite policymakers with cultural leaders to strengthen Britain’s place on the world stage and further our objectives from disinformation, to women's education, to combatting climate change. (END).

Our allies are setting the example:
🎵 Korea uses K-pop stars in peace summits.
👗 Macron uses Paris Fashion Week to cement France’s global influence.

The Ukraine war is a stark reminder: Military defence matters, but so does soft power.

Some African nations’ hesitation to condemn Russia revealed deeper global dynamics shaped by cultural influence. Soft power is geopolitics in action
January 19, 2025 at 2:26 PM
Meanwhile... China, for example, has invested heavily in soft power.

📚 Confucius Institutes now surpass the combined attendance of @alliancefrancaise.bsky.social , BritishCouncil & Instituto Cervantes.

While we step back, others step in. The implications are real.
January 19, 2025 at 2:26 PM
There have been clear missed opportunities:
🎸 No EU deal on touring artists.
🛑 Ending the Tradeshow Access Programme.
📉 Chronic underfunding of @bbcworldservice.bsky.social
& British Council

And now:
🔻 Creative exports are down in many sub-sectors.
🔻 Fewer tourists are visiting cultural landmarks.
🔻 Fewer young people are engaging with UK cultural exports.
Our global brand is shrinking... and this is a crisis of complacency, not deliberate defunding.
January 19, 2025 at 2:26 PM
In our report, we emphasised the UK’s global leadership in the creative industries – a cornerstone of our soft power. But suggested this enviable position is at risk due to complacent policymaking.
