The culture wars over cycling need to stop in this country.

It is incumbent upon elected officials to ask “what is the best way to ensure that people can get around safely, equitably, affordably, and efficiently?”

Walking, cycling, and mass transit are major parts of the answer.

But you're right, they're building some fabulous infrastructure now.

Those *are* ambitious goals compared to St. John's. Our mode share targets are 16% sustainable mode share (all public and active transit) by 2030, 22% by 2050. When they set these in 2020 it was 13%. No target specifically for cycling. Going to write to City Hall right now for an update.

@brentkeeping.bsky.social I saw you liked this and I'm so glad because, even though I don't know you well at all, from what I do know, I think you will love this podcast too. Let me know if I'm right.

Local poet Don Austin wrote that St. John's is "...where the 7,821 km Trans-Canada Highway finally ends, turning out to be a cul-de-sac after all."

Wait, what do you mean "no seating from Monkstown to Guy?" There are benches between Monkstown and Newtown, not sure about from there to Guy, but there are benches nearby, maybe not right on the trail but visible. Still needs swings and hammocks though.

KB is wonderful, isn't it? (Just needs some basket swings, ha!) I'm so sorry I missed the Critical Mass KB ride--I was planning to come then forgot and was so disappointed when I found out you did KB!! Let's do it again when they finish the next bit.

I took the bus and ferry from Moncton to St. John's last year. I knew to have cash for DRL but was worried about inability to reserve so I called them about it and they said if the bus was full they would send a second bus. I think you can only contact them by phone too. Great thread--thanks!

St. John's once had "Mile 1" just to be even more confusing and it was further west but then they extended the highway and put this plaque at City Hall. Also, TCH actually ends (or starts) at the world's most scenic city dump. Sorry no photo--it's surrounded by lupins and spectacular ocean views.

Exactly! And the care lavished (enforced, regulated) on children inside vehicles and the utter lack of care for children outside vehicles. True not only of car seats but also of "safer" vehicles and rise of pedestrian/cyclist injury and death. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
