I would not have the same fate to befall you.” After a deep breath, she asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to take over the family brewery. It belongs to you as you are the oldest, and you’re also the best brew mistress in all of Shantyr.” Nin shook her head. “It’s not where my heart lies.”

Max made sure David’s Executive Assistant had waters, beverages, snacks and the full welcome mat laid out. It was the first time Bravovix would be coming to Paris EnCRYPTion Solution’s offices, but it was also the first chance to see Madison since their rendezvous in the backseat of his car.

Nin is convinced that a man as handsome as Darach could not be truly interested in her, so his flirting she considers either disingenuous or he would even flirt with a rock.

It’s because of him I must go on this journey.” She growled under her breath, her hands gripping the leather reins a bit tighter causing the leather to creak. “I would have to thank him, then.” There was an amused lilt in his voice as he explained, “For if it wasn’t for him, you would not have gone on this journey, and I would not find myself riding behind such a lovely and enchanting woman.” Nin’s mind was in a whirl, vacillating between swooning for this man who was flirting with her and wary suspicion he was merely saying these words, convinced he was still going to rob her, but wait for the bigger payout later as she foolishly told him about the hoard of gold. It was only because she was caught up in the moment of finally having a real person willing to listen to her spill her guts out while showing her a bit of sympathy that she opened her big mouth. It was on the road she was currently traveling that her uncle had lost her life over coin.

But even before we reach the negotiation phase, our current contract says any competitive bidder will be disclosed by Paris,” Madison clarified. “In a small percentage of the acquisitions I’ve been involved in, another suitor at the ball has come along and sought to woo the debutante away.”

First night at the inn and Darach slept on the floor, seeing how Nin was as frightened as a doe about to bolt. But come morning, he'll still let her know he would have preferred the bed.

Stretching like a cat, he reached his arms up over his head while yawning. As he stretched, his muscles flexed, which made Nin sigh with admiration of his perfect form. Rolling on his side, his cheek propped up on his palm, he smiled up at Nin staring down at him from her bed. “Good morning,” she squeaked out, trying to fill the awkward silence. “It would be an even better morning if I had the pleasure of keeping you company in bed last night,” he teased. Nin pulled the blanket up over to cover her face. “We wouldn’t have done anything you didn’t want, but to wake up next to you? That would have made it a great morning.” Nin was internally fighting with herself again. Darach was either the world’s biggest flirt and teased all women this mercilessly or he was going for the long con to steal her gold and was trying to break down her defenses by getting her to trust him.

So when he finished off a bottle of this Glenlivet that he spent probably eight hundred on, I took the empty bottle, the box, bought some cheap-ass rotgut Scotch for twelve bucks, poured it into the bottle, mixed in a touch of that liquid smoke they use for cooking to add smokiness to it, a drop of iodine and a bit of sulfured blackstrap molasses, bought a bag of bottle top wraps that I used my hairdryer to shrink wrap, and voila.” “There is no way that he would think that–” “When I saw him three weeks ago, he thanked me for the Scotch, said it was sublime.” Madison and Max were both laughing once more.

This is the moment Nin first sees Darach walking upon the road and offers him a ride.

Even from a distance, she could tell that he was tall and broad shouldered. He had medium-colored warm brown hair that came down in thick gentle waves down to the upper middle of his back, and a simple hat to keep the rain off his head made of green wool felt. He was walking in the same direction as she was traveling, so she only saw him from the back wearing a pair of brown breeches, a long tunic of dark green belted, and a dark brown cloak and boots. There was a slight limp in his walk, which caused him to have a slow pace. Having recently suffered from a sprained ankle, she empathized, knowing how difficult it was to walk with a bad ankle or foot. As Barley slowly plodded forward past the stranger, Nin promised herself she would not look. If she did, she may feel compelled to offer the stranger a ride to Ballihazel, or as far as he was traveling on the same road she was for the time being. Holding her breath, she closed her eyes as Barley walked around him. It was when she was a few horse lengths in front of the stranger, the pang of guilt made her stop. ‘Why? Why do I feel compelled to stop and help this stranger,’ she wondered, questioning her sanity, her Aunt Sadhbh drilling her over the years that strangers met on the road are dangerous.

Nin’s breath hitched from surprise. That was the name of her best friend, the grand oak who knew all her secrets and listened without judgement. She had only ever spoken the name to herself, whispered only while hiding along the leaves. Darach’s hands were firmly holding her waist, the rumble of his voice in his chest against her back, while hearing his name roll off his tongue made her head spin in a way she had only ever felt when she had drunken some of the strong honey wine her aunt made rarely for special occasions. She had difficulty swallowing, and when she did she nearly gulped aloud, her body feeling strange in close proximity to Darach. Was this fear she was experiencing? She had been afraid before, but this felt different, even if her body was quivering. Her stomach was feeling even more strange, the snake becoming butterflies, while her heart began thundering in her chest and her head feeling a little numb. He leaned his head down just enough so that his mouth hovered over her ear when he sweetly purred, “And what is your name, bláthín?”

Spying a black hoodie laying idly on the backseat, she threw it over her head and upper body, trying to hide her red blouse, attempting to blend in with the car’s dark granite gray upholstery, thankful her skirt and shoes were black. At least her hair was still pinned up and confined. Peeking out from the edge of the hoodie, she saw Max hold up a hand and try and partially shield his face from being seen.

While on a walk outside of her village, Nin's necklace had fallen from her neck. A mischievous raven swooped in and carried it into the sacred forest and set it down, as if to taunt Nin to come and get it.

She listened to hear if there was the sound of music, for she had learned since she was a small child to never follow the enchanting sounds into the sacred forest, as it was the fairies, and she would be lured beneath Mulhcráeb where they lived. It was Lughnasadh, one of the special nights of the years the fairies had come out to play and troop. If she were to fall under their enchantment, she may not return for years, and upon returning, she would spend her days lamenting to return. There were tales of those who had withered away, no longer possessing any appetite for mortal food, having lost all its flavor. Those who had returned from the fairy realm pined away the rest of their short remaining days for fairy food.

Madison is used to working later, and back in New York, there were LOTS of late night dining options. In Silicon Valley, most restaurants close up around 8 or 9, so dining options past that are few and far between.

As Madison stood, she began to sway, with Max trying to grab a hold of her by the arms before she promptly sat back down once more, listing to one side. “Low blood sugar,” she said before adding. “I can feel I’m crashing.” “I’ll drive,” Max insisted as he placed an arm around Madison’s waist to make sure she stayed upright while escorting her out to his car in the parking lot.

This was the time of year when storms would be start up again. They had been blessed with mostly good weather, but as the year progressed from Summer towards Autumn, the rains returned. She hoped the barley was ripe enough to harvest back in the fields as harvesting wet barley was more likely to lead to rot over the winter months.

Nin is looking forward to the Autumnal festival, her favorite time of the year for many reasons, mostly in hopes that she may be picked by the lottery as Queen of the Forest and the forest god will carry her away

In less than a month she would begin brewing the ale for the Autumnal festival that honored Cráeb, God of the Forest, he who provided wood to cask the ale brewed, provide timber to build houses and kindling to keep them warm during the cold Winter months. His acorns provided additional food when crops failed, and fruit that ripened in the sacred forest fed the animals that provided game to hunt. The festival was one of the four major seasonal festivals the village observed and honored. The Spring festival honored Eostre, the Summer festival that honored Áine, and Winter Yule with the honoring of Cailleach. The Autumnal festival was her favorite as the freshly harvested barley made the best ale of the year, the food was the best of all the festivals featuring apples and hazelnuts roasted with caraway and honey, and acorn cakes, in addition to being held the day before her birthday, the first day after the full Autumnal moon.
