The UNEP GAP report is not the kind of reading that makes climate scientists smile. But this figure is not all bleak - look at all the emissions curves pointing downwards!

Many factors create differences. The policy areas were profoundly shaped by the political climate at the time they first emerged, with climate policy emerging in the 1990ies and nature protection in the pre-second world war decades.

I learned a lot from comparing the two areas, they where even more different than I imagined initially. while climate policy is dominated by targets, pricing and subsidies, nature protection has more top-down regulations, and public-private collaboration is crucial. 2/n

Norwegian elections resulted in continued Labour minority rule. Greens are happy with best election results ever, other small green parties lost votes. Record high support for populist right Fremskrittspartiet. Devastatingly bad result for the conservatives. What does it mean for climate policy? 1/

Wish me good luck! I feel honored, I really look forward to it, but I am also a bit nervous. I know this is not an easy task. I have said yes to serve as lead author in the @ipcc.bsky.social.

I am stepping down after tree years in the Swedish Climate Policy Council. I have learned so much! Thanks to all the wise and talented people I have worked with in the council and its secretariat. Now I will get more time to assess climate governance, watch this space for upcoming research results!

What is the role of the state in getting to net-zero emissions? A fabulous crew of wise, knowledgeable, friendly and generous scholars met in Paris earlier this week to read each others’ work and discuss this. And wow, we really did learn a lot from each other!

Fed up with Elon? Me too.

Why should you still listen to the podcast series «X Man»? Because it will make you wiser. I wish I had could communicate my knowledge as Jill Lepore.

For those of you with the same cultural preferences as Elon it is maybe an even better and more scary experience.

Back in 1993 Leonard Cohen released an album entitled «The Future». The lyrics of «Democracy» is well suited to comfort and embolden those of you fighting to protect and improve democracy in the US. In our time. You may succeed in making Cohen a prophet. 🧵

I have had a wonderful Easter celebration with our dog Ziggy. 30 years since the last time I belonged to a family that brought a dog with us into the mountains. Lots of fun in the snowy areas of Luster, one of the few areas Norwegians could find snow this year and practice Easter tradition nr. 1: ⛷️

The climate bureaucrats where allowed to make many nice and pedagogic figures in the white paper. We can all improve our PowerPoint presentations now!

A big thank you to the US citizens (presumably?) that give us the 🤯 emoji. It fits all news coming from the present US administration. Due to Trump-induced cognitive drain in my brain it is also often the only reaction I am able to produce.

Sweden has a long and proud history as climate leader, but now it is faltering. The current government has created uncertainty relating to the status and importance of climate targets. This has created similar governance challenges to what we see in my home country Norway. This makes me worried.

We had agriculture as our main focus area this year. Several European countries have have developed long-term transition plans for this sector, but not Sweden. We encourage 🇸🇪 to get started, and to include a broad array of societal actors in the process. Much to learn from🇩🇰!
March 20, 2025 at 7:23 PM
In order to reach net-zero by 2045, Sweden must shift gears in relation to electrification of the society (renewables,
and not only waiting for nuclear), climate transition in the industry and adapt a package of measures for transport.
March 20, 2025 at 7:19 PM
This figure shows that in 2023 the government made several decisions that increased the gap to 2030-targets, and although they have made some improvements later these are far from sufficient to get the country on the right track. It especially problematic that emissions from transport are rising.
March 20, 2025 at 7:15 PM
The 🇸🇪 Government’s current climate policies are insufficient to meet Sweden’s climate targets+EU commitments for 2030. While some decisions announced in 2024 are steps in the right direction, they do not offset the negative decisions made in the years prior.
March 20, 2025 at 7:11 PM
Meanwhile, what is going on in Sweden? Today we, the professors in the Swedish Climate Policy Council, presented our report. We have assessed whether Sweden is on its way to meet its climate targets, national targets and EU targets. Main conclusion: we are worried. This 🧵 with a short summary.
