Physical oceanographer @UiB, Norway with one foot in the Weddell Sea (where I try to figure out how the ocean contribute to ice shelf melt) and the other in the Norwegian fjords (where we study how climate change affects for example the oxygen)
🌊What a gang!Fjord enthusiasts from all over the world - Chile, Europe, Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, Greenland and, somewhat surprisingly, Costa Rica - have discussed "Fjords in a changing climate" in Stalheim, Norway.I've learnt so much - and I look forward to meet these nice people in Chile, 2027!

🌊Everything is ready - I hope! - for the workshop "Fjords in a changing climate" at Stalheim, Norway, next week. I'm super-excited to welcome more than seventy fjord researchers from all over the world to learn about and discuss their research! bjerknes.uib.no/en/fjords-in...

There's a new Dr Darelius in town - big congratulations to my little sister!

Back to the basics - checking water transparency with a secchi-disk and students from UiB. The "disappeared" at 12m in Masfjorden - what will it be in the supposedly murky Lurefjorden? Bets are on!

🌊 Mooring deployment with a view! In Masfjorden, Norway with students from the University of Bergen

🌊At sea again! This time with students from the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen: watersampling

We just had the first cancellation from a US scientist who can no longer participate in our workshop on "Fjords in a changing climate" because the title includes the forbidden c** word. Insane, unbelievable, but most of all very, very sad.

Amazing weekend in Finse, Norway!

🌊New day, new CTDs! We're collecting data to do research on the effect of climate change on the deep water renewal rate and the oxygenation of Norwegian fjords.

🌊Fjord oceanography: mooring recovery (can you spot the buoys?) and water sampling all day long!

🌊 Heading into the fjords for oceanographic fieldwork with students - beautiful scenery... and beautiful pancake ice!!

Eagerly waiting for dredging-news from Polarstern and the Weddell Sea... Will they be able to get M6 to the surface?? Supposed to happen this afternoon!
February 6, 2025 at 11:50 AM
🌊Phase-sensitive radars (or ApRES amongst friends) are so cool! This is how the ice thickness at site M2 on the Fimbul ice shelf, Antarctica, has changed lately. Superimposed on the overall thinning (a combination of strain, snow compaction, and basal melt) you see the effect of tides on the ice!
February 5, 2025 at 2:10 PM
It's still there! Polarstern tried to contact&release my second mooring (M6) this morning but got no answer... so they gave up and moved on to M3 (which is now safely recovered&redeployed -jippie!!)... But when passing over the site on the way back this appeared on the fishfinder! M6 is still there!

🌊 Four years of oceanographic data from the southern Weddell Sea just made it to the surface!!! (and one happy oceanographer just made it to the office :-)
January 27, 2025 at 7:36 AM
Excuse me, Mr. Iceberg. Can you please hang around elsewhere? These are my moorings!
January 23, 2025 at 3:33 PM
Last year "Team FIO" and I spent five weeks on Fimbullisen, Antarctica, installing two sub-ice shelf moorings. They were to be serviced yesterday, but the weather didn't allow the pilots to land at the sites... Finger's crossed for the next attempt on New Year's Day!🌊

Yesterday, I was reminded about the "HEUREKA" moment in the lab at the University of Washington when we managed to visualize what we named the "Ekman Helix" - the beautiful (?) result of rotation, friction, stratification, and a sloping channel. It's been almost twenty years!
