So anyway I maybe promised God I would watch regular season NHL games if we won and now I need to figure out what my contractual obligation actually is here.

As a little bit of escapism I started a Redbubble shop for my sticker designs. (Yes these are the stickers I use to bribe students to participate when I sub for their normal instructors.)

Dr. Nugent is my supervisor for my MA and I am so giddy to see him recognized by the SCS for his excellence in teaching. I am so grateful to him for everything he has taught me and am incredibly privileged to have him as a mentor.

Got to give my first lecture in a non-language course & a student emailed the instructor saying: “She presented the material in a really engaging way and did a great job making sure everyone understood it, and was generally just a delightful presenter to have in class."

I could actually cry. 🥹🥹🥹

In my rush to get to campus early so that I could get some quiet time to prep for teaching before everyone got here, I forgot the keys to my office. So now I have to wait for people to get here to let me in, thus defeating the entire reason I got up early. The omens are clearly great for today.

Me with the first year Latin students: Why yes, with time and dedication you too can master Latin, that most dignified of languages.

Me in a grad school tutorial: So where I think I went wrong was I forgot the difference between what a noun and an adjective is.

Thrilled the first year Latin classes have been vocal about how excited they are to have me sub for them again.

Less thrilled that they told their prof that they only want me because I give them stickers if they participate. Like don’t rat me out for buying your love.

Absolutely wild that I suggested instead of a paper I should write a commentary for my Latin tutorial. Absolutely wild that I looked my supervisor dead in the eyes and said “I’ve never done a commentary and it’s a skill I’d like to learn.” What was I thinking?!!?

There’s a divide in how my friends in grad school & my friends with corporate jobs react to stuff. I’ll say “They’re renovating an office for me, it used to be a storage closet, & I only have to share it with one person!” And some people do not realize that I’m trying to brag.

I have no idea how my insurance adjuster is going to react when I say that one of the impacts of the car crash is that I am struggling to translate Latin with my concussion. I suspect I will have to elaborate on why this is actually a problem.

Rarely have these this far south.

The best thing about my university using me as the face of a fundraising campaign is having men loose their minds in the comments. Even funnier because my last paper was on male fragility in the Roman world.

Someone in Greek blanked on the translation for κύριος and I failed to sensor myself and said daddy which is apparently not an acceptable translation for it in the New Testament.

I can’t believe Loeb is going to make me go upstairs and look for something in a physical book. Don’t they know that I am one minor inconvenience away from crying?

Actually pretty sure the research portal is just academic hazing. Like you’ve told me the results of the grant competition are there and yet… no one can get to them?

Hands down the most deranged thing I do during Latin on zoom is turn off my camera to take and send selfies to the other people in the zoom call.

Nothing like getting to the end of a bunch of catalogue data entry only to realize you’ve labeled a bunch of stuff as ‘sword and scandals’ and not ‘sword and sandals’.

Maybe the most unhinged and yet on brand thing I’ve ever baked. Looking forward to forcing my 9:30 Latin class to celebrate my birthday.

My favourite part of sight translation is when there’s a word you do not know and guess based on meaning based on what you think the etymology is and they end up with a wild phrase like “I took my footy shoes and shod myself.”

Every time I have someone over they say the want a spiral staircase with a 20 ft. ceiling like I have and then I have to tell them that the only way I can get the cobwebs down is by taping a fully extended swiffer duster to the end of a broom while risking my life balancing on the top landing.

Writting a personal statement as part of an application to the department you already in is exceptionally weird. Like I can’t even pretend to be a better person than I am because they know me.

I take some solace in the fact that I found out I would need spine surgery before I paid the application fees for all of the grad schools I thought I would be applying to. Now to keep my fingers crossed that my department continues to like me enough to let me stay here.
