Asleep in the sun for caturday

Autumn is my favorite season. The light turns magical, pulling yellow-gold highlights and sore purple shadows out of sunlight. Every white wall is a kaleidoscope. And that little spark of chill in the air says “ hurry. Things are changing.”

This was the most interesting thing in the FY24 HSR report to me. There are several factors behind this rise, including historically rich stock market valuations. But don't we think consolidation also plays a role? The rise of unicorns? Making more bets of this size leaves less room for error.

I hadn’t noticed a beech tree in my side yard by the woods - but the critters don’t miss a trick. The masts have started appearing all over my patio, raided. They are so neat. Might have to harvest some beech nuts for myself!

Challenge: post your last photo taken in DC to show what a hellhole it is. (Although it always makes me feel like Orpheus coming up from hell).

Every year I look forward to the brief sour cherry season. Always the goal is a good haul of Hungarian sours, which bleed dark. But for volume I wind up with a bucket of montmorency, which bleed clear. Pitting morellos always looks like a murder scene. So. Good.

Carl spent 9 months in a small cage at a shelter. He had finally moved to a foster home just a few days before we adopted him. He is a total weirdo and has some medical issues, but he is a gem of a critter. And he smiles in his sleep.

Good news: black swallowtail butterflies are beautiful!

Bad news: damn it, I planted that dill for me to eat. There are dozens of these guys chowing down.
