Brief thread: Work and workplaces are changing (again), thanks to AI & related tech. But toward what, and for whose benefit? It was terrific to join the really creative AI+HI (Artificial Intelligence+Human Ingenuity) podcast with my Brookings colleague, Molly Kinder

The hits keep on coming
“The startup’s tagline, ‘Not owned by anybody,’ is a pointed reference to billionaire Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos and other moguls who, in Rubin’s view, have ‘bent the knee’ to President-elect Donald Trump.”

Favorite new thing. Amapiano music from South Africa. Not new (even if the “breakout” hits only date to 2018 or so), just new for me, I’m late to the party but enthusiastic. Why it’s awesome music:

Spoiler alert: this is super wonky. It’s about how to (actually) develop our cities & their neighborhoods in ways that keep them much more affordable to live in, ie for the 99% of folks who aren’t affluent.

One key Q for the first hundred days of the Trump admin & new Congress (both sides of the aisle): Will our leaders recognize that we can’t transform advanced industries without a Marshall Plan for small businesses AND their workers.

Fantastic piece by my friend & shero, Cecilia M. Clear-eyed, pointed & so sorely needed now. Notes, e.g. that once the big-tent immigration reform coalition collapsed, its most determined faction raced to the extreme, where it’s hard to win & easy to self defeat @ceciliamunoz.bsky.social
Co-wrote this after a lot of reflection: it’s a heartfelt assessment of how Democrats can make immigration a winning issue again. This is not an intractable problem - but we have to be willing to embrace solutions that address the public’s concerns at the border.

How Democrats Lost Their Way on Immigration
The party once championed an approach popular with voters and politicians alike. Why give up on it?

If you want analysis on the federal budget and the implications for people, @bbkogan.bsky.social is your guy
What does $2.5 trillion in mandatory cuts mean?

Well, Republicans have been open about wanting to gut Medicaid and SNAP.

$2.5 trillion in cuts could mean:
-cutting Medicaid 32%
-cutting Medicaid & SNAP 28%
-entirely eliminating SNAP, TANF, SSI, and the Child Care entitlement to states
"cut $2.5 trillion in net mandatory spending" means they're cutting Medicaid, SNAP, and other things

they can't cut Social Security, but many other things are potentially on the table.
