Well, that and the Conservatives falsely gave Jim Flaherty credit for the things that Paul Martin did to insulate the economy from the very shocks that created the crisis in the US, and too many people believed it.
A key difference was that '08 was early in Harper's tenure, and thus politically survivable. The 'cost of living' challenge came late in Trudeau's, and that made it easier for Poilievre to hammer him with it.

I went to a barbershop today. My barber asked me how I came to Canada. I told her through a refugee program. Then she asked, "You came here on a boat?" I told her I flew. What is odd to me is some people still think if you come to Canada through refugee program, you come here on a boat.
