Might not be right but consider throwbacks like the Ramona series and even Judy Blume like Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. That's one of the few books my nephew enjoyed when he was younger (and 15 years before a doctor diagnosed him with binocular vision dysfunction!)

That must have been a terrible post. I am guessing that that person meant something other than "teach kids how to make friends" or be part of an community.
