Volcanologist. Mom. Gen-Xer. New Yorker. Hello World.

What she said. Exactly.
Call your Senators and House Reps to point out what an egregious example of waste, fraud, and abuse this would be. HUD Sec Turner is asking for extensive renovations including a private elevator, gym, and luxury dining room for himself and his cronies.
NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years.

NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."

A victory for the federal scientific workforce! We could not stand by while this irreparable harm continues at NSF, NOAA and all our scientific agencies.

TODAY the judge granted our request to temporarily HALT the mass firings at federal agencies under Trump’s Executive Order.

At a time when data repositories are being shut and defunded, an engaging and fascinating symposium about data, held at #LDEO for our 75th anniversary. So thankful for my thoughtful community and colleagues.

This is a REALLY big deal. A huge amount of volcanic activity in the world happens beneath the sea where we can't see it, and often don't know it's happening. This is only the third time we have *ever* seen a submarine eruption, and the first at a mid-ocean ridge. AMAZING stuff.
**BIG NEWS in the geology world!** For the first time, scientists spotted an active eruption along the mid-ocean ridge!!

They visited the hydrothermal vent the day before, where a vibrant ecosystem thrived in the sweltering water. The next day, everything was gone. ⚒️🧪

Volcanic Eruption in Deep Ocean Ridge Is Witnessed by Scientists for First Time (Gift Article)
Researchers diving in a submersible in the eastern Pacific realized that the landscape they had studied the day before had been glassed over by fresh lava.

A friend's research grant just got canceled, because why would we want to advance utilization of genetic research in clinical settings in ephrology?? It's not like ALL people have kidneys, right? So frustrating. Here is the info from NIH: reporter.nih.gov/project-deta..., for anyone interested.

#standupforscience in NYC. felt particularly urgent after hearing about the funding cuts targeted of #ColumbiaUniversity.
Aldo, I’m really pissed that the regime is saying this is somehow for me, as a Jew. Well, it is not. Keep hands off science funding.

The 1946 tsunami from Alaska killed ~170 people in Hilo (red line, 26 ft/8m). A tsunami originating from the 1960 Valdivia quake killed 61 (white line, 15 ft/4.6m). One of those people was the grandparent of a current student.

The firing of PTWC scientists will have deadly consequences for us.

So happy to be back in Hawaii! Since becoming a volcanologist, I visited in 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2018, but my 2021 visit got jumbled by a pandemic and a baby. Hopefully back on track now!
