My Dad loved Dahlias and boy he babied them, filling the boot of our car with cow manure to tuck around their roots and digging their tubers up every autumn. I never really liked them but any mention of them & I am again 7 years old & standing out in the rain in solidarity with the man and them.

And part of why Parks trained for that moment was because there *had* been a (much younger) woman who had, nine months prior, spontaneously refused to move to the back of a bus: Claudette Colvin.
She was a girl, in fact, just 15 years old; after her arrest, she became pregnant.
