Wow, this resonated with me so much. Thank you @tressiemcphd.bsky.social for these impactful words. What an incredible observation.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.
Listen to all of it!

Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

1 point I would add to this excellent article: this type of research, among others, will continue - just not here. mRNA research will continue, but elsewhere (EU, China...). If we want the fruits of this research, what will we have to do? Import them. When we have the infrastructure here, for now.
Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

I vaguely remember a time when I did not closely track a state Supreme Court election in a state in which I do not live in an off year like my life depended on it. But here we are and 🍾🥳🍾🎉

Huh. I didn't realize when I buy things I'm "losing" money. Here I thought I was exchanging something I have (money) for something I want (goods or services) that have a value (price) that I personally determined is equivalent enough to proceed with the exchange and get what I want. Silly me.
REPORTER: But we're seeing as a result that ports here in the US, the traffic has really slowed and now thousands of dockworkers are truck drivers are worried about their jobs

TRUMP: That means we lose less money ... when you say it slowed down, that's a good thing, not a bad thing

Our bumper Mulberry crop this year, though bad news for keeping the back deck clean, has attracted huge museums of Cedar Waxwing. I just love when they visit. #birds 🪶

Well done, @gatechengineers.bsky.social! This morning’s Master’s ceremony was quite entertaining. The pre-ceremony wrangling of students was hilarious. And having Deans and Chairs enter to the Imperial March was particularly inspired. 😂

Thanks to deliberate governor investment in supporting scientific research that started in the waning days of WWII, the U.S. developed both technological and economic dominance. Now these chucklefucks are systematically dismantling that so we can create jobs screwing screws into things.

My photos don’t do the ATL march justice. 20,000+ filing down Peachtree St on the ~3 mile walk from Piedmont Park to the Capitol. Had to set up rally overflow space. Impromptu sign collection site at MARTA entrance. #handsoff

We’ve been on the phone with multiple agencies/orgs. They’ve been completely cut off from federal money. We’re talking housing, homeless services, public safety, etc.

I’m calling a press conference today to explain how this could have drastic local impacts to our constituents.

Gah. So true. So sadly true. I'm tired of billionaires who need validation.
I’ve said it before, will doubtless say it again: These folks are going to be permanently resentful because they’re seeking political power as a substitute for cultural power, and it’s never going to give them what they actually want.
I love how far afield this is from any problem government can address. “Now that Trump won people have to like and agree with me and not tell me I suck anymore.” bsky.app/profile/yash...

This would, you know, require newspapers to practice journalism. Something they apparently stopped doing in 2015.
My plea to reporters is to not call it the Department of Government Efficiency. It is not a Department. It is almost certainly going to a Federal Advisory Committee, and it is very important that reporters accurately convey that Vivek and Elon are working on an advisory committee.

I have to say The Black Stallion. I had read all the books and was just absolutely rapt during the movie, particularly the first half.
What’s your best memory of watching a movie? I’m not asking what the best movie you’ve ever seen is, I’m asking about the experience of watching that movie. Doesn’t matter if it was in a theater or at home. What’s your favorite memory associated with watching a movie and why?
