A good reads review of my book I Am In Bed With You. Review says: What's the power of poetry? It is, I think, in expanding one's own knowledge of language, one's own appreciation for the power of language. Thinking through language and through emotion are two key parts of both reading and writing. Emma Barnes' collection is sublime, a delightful mess of emotions and images that I found myself getting lost in. If everything was written with this much care and thought and effort, we'd be in a much better place, I think. I felt very seen by this work. Thanks to the person who recommended this to me, I deeply appreciate it <3

I was reviewed in The Listener! Given that this reviewer has a very transphobic past and I'm not sure he even likes poetry I think I got away pretty lightly. Bracing, like the waikirikiri (harper-avoca) in winter.
IF WE KNEW HOW TO WE WOULD by Emma Barnes (Auckland University Press, $24.99) Emma Barnes warns us in a preface that "this book deals with themes of suicide, grief and depression" and also says to "particularly avoid the middle section if you aren't up to this content". Barnes deals with important things, especially intimate relationships. The focus is on the human body and the human creatures that we are. The poem I am a circle says, "You can see I am one thousand years old in a body made of all the decisions of ancestors and the cold crush of time". Throughout, this collection is made of prose poetry, presented in solid blocks of print. Nearly all is told in the first person. Is this collection near to being confessional? Maybe. At any rate, much of Barnes's life seems to be clear. There is apparently a break-up. One poem, Chain of connected resentment, suggests fearsome love-hate. Though sometimes coming near to despair, Barnes buoys us with unexpected imagery and fast moving one-liners - bracing, even if the subject is often sombre. Review by Nicolas Reid.

I released a book and my absolute favourite thing is seeing it turn up in people’s homes sometimes as far as Naarm! There’s always more of this on Instagram but I like it everywhere it happens.

Pour one out for my favourite magnolia tree chopped down before it could flower this year for unknown reasons. I walk past its spot most everyday and still turn my head to look for it.

Went to see Supergroove in Havelock North and they were great but the surprise stars were the gannets whose colony we visited. And honestly the figs.

I’ve been pretty sober recently but I had two glasses of wine (a delicious vouvray) with a friend last night, hooned a cheeseburger from The Ram, then hooned home on a scooter in the humid evening and this is the result.

OK but also this was my breakfast. And my cat took a big drink of my coffee because she is a menace and I briefly forgot she liked to do that. Gotta balance the timeline.
A bowl of yogurt, muesli and fruits. The bowl is hand made by a local potter, the Clay Os speckled. The fruits are locally grown. They are huge ripe strawberries, raspberries and the perfect body horror fruit: figs. You can just see a tattooed wrist at the edge of the bowl. The background is the duvet as I’m still in bed eating breakfast.

Did the loop of Waimāpihi cause I’m off work and apparently think hill climbs are good? This is at the end looking over my beloved, weird little valley.

Said goodbye to this perfect angel yesterday. She’d been unwell for a while and we made the call to end her little life last night. 19 years of her being around certainly makes it feel weird and sad now!
